The Race

Enjoy some of the most breathtaking scenery while running 26.2 miles over the Island of Catalina. The race traverses mostly dirt trails and roads through areas of the interior of the Island where very few have gone. The race starts in Two Harbors and runs to Avalon. It is a hilly, challenging Marathon, but worth every mile! Who knows, you may even run with Suuntosome buffalos!

The Buffalo Run Half Marathon and Catalina Marathon will combine to form the American Trail Championship, presented by Suunto.  Awards will be based on the combined time in both events and given to the top male and female overall as well as winners in each age and weight category.  Participants who compete in both events will receive an American Trail Championship t-shirt.

Ultimate American Trail Championship VIP Entry: Treat yourself to this ultimate deal! Includes: Entry into Catalina Marathon and Buffalo Run Half Marathon, Marathon Race Day Boat, Official 2009 Catalina Marathon & Buffalo Run Hats, and 2009 Official American Trail Championship Lapel Pin.

American Trail Series

The 52.4 Pacific Challenge

52.4 Pacific ChallengeThis represents the total number of miles in the Rose Bowl Half Marathon, Buffalo Run Half Marathon and the Catalina Marathon. Amazing as it may seem, the distance from Pasadena to Catalina is very close to 52.4 miles. For the 2008 Rose Bowl Half Marathon and 2009 Buffalo Run and Catalina Marathon, anyone who finishes all 3 races will receive a special finisher t-shirt with the 52.4 logo on the front and the logo of all 3 events on the back. Awards will be given to the top 5 times overall in male and female only for the first season. We will post the cumulative times following the first two events and monitor it through the finale at the Catalina Marathon next March. There is no charge or entry fee, we only ask that you check off on your online registration that you plan to do all three. Good luck training for a great challenge.

Marathon Cut-off Time

An 8 hour cut-off time will be in force for the Marathon. After that, your time will not be officially recorded.

Pre-Race Dinner in Avalon and Two Harbors

As of now, there is no organized dinner on Friday evening for marathon participants staying in Avalon. There are many restaurants in Avalon to choose from, although you should make your reservations ahead of time. It is a very busy evening for them. If there will be an organized dinner, we will post that information here. The restaurant in Two Harbors will be open for those of you staying in Two Harbors on Friday night.

Marathon Race Day Boat and Saturday Morning Arrival

If you are staying in Avalon on Friday night, race management provides a chartered "race day boat" which takes all participants from Avalon to the start of the race in Two Harbors the morning of the race. The boat departs Avalon from the cruise dock at 5:00 am SHARP! It will arrive in Two Harbors at 5:45 am. They will have coffee, juice, water and chips for you to purchase if you would like. It is recommended that you purchase a ticket when you enter the race, either online or when sending a form into our office. There is no guarantee that there will be spots on the boat if you wait until Friday night to purchase a ticket.

If you purchased a ticket with your entry, you will pick up your ticket with your race number at registration on Friday evening. If you purchased a ticket for someone who is not participating in the race, the marathon race day boat is not coming back to Avalon. They must take a Safari Bus or the Marina del Rey Flyer from Two Harbors to Avalon. See the travel page for details.

If you want to come in from the mainland on Saturday morning directly into Two Harbors, the Marina Del Rey Flyer has an early morning boat. Other than personal transportation, this is the only way to come in from the mainland on Saturday morning in time for the start of the race. For complete details on this boat and a schedule, go to http://www.catalinaferries.com/pacific-sports.html

Bag Transportation from Two Harbors

There will be a truck that will transport clothing, camping equipment, etc. from Two Harbors to Avalon once the race starts. You should have your items clearly marked in a bag with your name and race number. You can pick up your clothing in Avalon by the stage at the finish line. If you leave any items at an aid station, we cannot guarantee that they will be returned to Avalon.

Camping and Safari Bus Information

There is camping in Two Harbors if you choose to stay there the night before the race. All sites have a picnic table, fire pit and BBQ. The phone number is 310-510-2800 for reservations. The Banning House is the only hotel in Two Harbors, but fills VERY quickly. There are also cabins. Each cabin has a refrigerator and heater and shares a restroom, shower and cooking area with other cabins. Reservation are required. 310-510-2800

If you are taking the race day boat from Avalon to the start in Two Harbors and you wish to bring someone with you, they can purchase a ticket on the race day boat. In order for them to get back to Avalon, they can take the Safari Bus back to Two Harbors. This is true also for non-participants staying in Two Harbors and wishing to get to Avalon for the finish of the race. The bus will leave Two Harbors at Noon and arrives in Avalon at 2 pm. Call 310.510.8368 for reservations.
